Descrizione | A specialized collection of actual and partly fossil molluscs shells |
Descrizione di dettaglio | The collection "Monterosato" consists of more than 500000 actual and partly fossil molluscs, belonging to all the living classes of the Phylum Mollusca (Polyplacophora, Monoplacophora, Gastropoda, Cephalopoda, Bivalvia and Scaphopoda), collected essentially in the Southern Hemisphere during the second half of the nineteenth century and during the twentieth century (essentially from 40s to the 60s). It is one of the most important historical collections of Mediterranean seashells of the Italian and international public Institutions. It was the result of over sixty years of research, between the second half of the nineteenth century and the twenties of the twentieth century, intensive harvesting of frequent trips to Italy and abroad from which the marquis Monterosato contains important material donated from his numerous correspondents, exchanges and multiple buyers. His collection is still in the original drawers, but the types which were founded on the descriptions of species new to science are now the subject of a critical survey to be progressively integrated into Tipoteca Section Malacology |
